Inspired by Psalm 35, The Passion Translation

Psalm 35:1-3

“O Lord, fight for me!  Harass the hecklers, accuse my accusers.  Fight those who fight against me.  Put on your armor, Lord; take up your shield and protect me.  Rise up, mighty God!  Grab your weapons of war and block the way of the wicked who come to fight me.  Stand for me when they stand against me!  Speak over my soul:  “I am your strong Savior!”

I am sometimes shocked by David’s honesty in his songs.  Maybe it’s not the fact that he’s so honest, but more what he got away with saying in a congregational song.  But deep down, I love it.  I have felt the same way, and I know what he’s talking about on a heart level.  Like this Psalm, I too have faced enemies.   I can’t even begin to count the number of times I’ve lifted up prayers when I felt such oppression.  Heartbreaking betrayals, swarms of lies, walls built to stop destinies.  I have felt the effects of those things.  And sometimes those things slip through the cracks of church doors and find places on the pews.

So David cries out…fight for me, accuse my accusers, stand for me, rise up mighty God!  And it’s an ok ask.

What parent doesn’t step in when someone is beating up their child?  God is a good Father.  We can ask, just like David did, for Him to step in for us.

And so I did.  As I was singing this Psalm, the emotions poured out.  Stand for me when they stand against me, speak for me when they speak against me, fight for me when they fight against me.

Just like you did for David, Lord, would you do it for me?
